Mind The Gap

SMSF vs industry fund: which super is right for you?

The short answer: an industry or retail fund suits most people most of the time. An SMSF is worth the extra responsibility when you want genuine control — over investments, property, or a coordinated structure — and your situation is complex enough to use it. There’s no single “best” super fund; the right one is the one that fits how involved you want to be and how complex your wealth is.

What an industry/retail fund does well

Pooled funds are simple, low-cost and largely hands-off. Investment, administration and compliance are handled for you, and for someone building wealth without unusual complexity, that’s often exactly right. There’s no prize for taking on more responsibility than your situation needs.

Where an SMSF earns its keep

  • Direct control over investments, including direct property
  • Holding business real property inside super
  • Coordinating super with a family trust or company structure
  • Tailored estate, succession and death-benefit planning

The trade-off: control for responsibility

An SMSF gives you control, but you become a trustee with real compliance obligations and an investment strategy you must actually run. It usually makes sense once there’s enough balance and complexity for that control to add more value than it costs in effort and oversight.

How to decide

The decision isn’t “which is better” in the abstract — it’s “which fits the architecture I’m building?” That’s the kind of question we work through in a Wealth Gap Conversation, before anything is set up.

Common questions

How much do you need to make an SMSF worthwhile?

There’s no single legal minimum, but an SMSF generally becomes worth the cost and responsibility once the balance and complexity are enough for the control to add real value. The better test is what you want the fund to do — direct property, business premises, coordinated structuring — not a round-number balance alone.

What is the best super fund in Australia?

There’s no single best super fund for everyone. The right fund depends on your balance, the fees and investments on offer, your insurance needs and how involved you want to be. Compare like for like — fees, long-term net performance, investment options and insurance — using an independent source such as the ATO’s YourSuper comparison tool on moneysmart.gov.au, then decide whether an industry, retail or self-managed fund fits your situation. General information only.

Can I have both an SMSF and an industry fund?

Yes. You can run a self-managed super fund alongside an APRA-regulated industry or retail fund — some people keep an industry fund for its insurance or a cash buffer while using an SMSF for direct property or shares. The trade-off is two sets of fees and admin, so it should be a deliberate strategy, not an accident.
